Thirty-two Is A Happy Number! Part 1
![]() |
| Source |
Serendipitous, I think, as I've "stumbled" twice on happiness books lately, and I just turned 32.
Where art thou, Christopher Pike?
I started reading Christopher Pike when I was in high school.
It all started with Die Softly, which a friend lent to me as she raved about the book. After that, I was hooked, and I devoured every Christopher Pike book that I can borrow from her. What little extra money I had left over my allowance then was spent on buying his books (well, those and cassette tapes LOL).
By the time I entered college, there were no more Christopher Pike books being sold in those big bookstores. I thought I would outgrow my love for his books as I had less of them to collect. But then I discovered a bookstore in the UP shopping center selling used books, which was a delight in itself already, but then I saw old Christopher Pike titles in there, and I was in love all over again. I scoured Booksale branches and other used-book stores just so I can find more Pike books.
Over the years, I've lost some [to I don't know where :(((] and gained more [as gifts, or unreturned loans LOL]. And here's my current stash:

Dear Old Love
How To Make An American Quilt by Whitney Otto:
As the twentieth century draws to a close, heads shake at the high divorce rate, the brutalization of the love affair, left in neglect or disarray. Leave that old lover. Move on. Take the A train. But in the dark of your room, you may be moved to admit to yourself that you only thought you fell out of love or grew tired of it (grew tired of a small miracle of the heart?), when in reality you may not have felt love at all, but something entirely different. Once you love, you cannot take it back, cannot undo it; what you felt may have changed, shifted slightly, yet still remains love. You still feel -- though very small -- the not-altogether-unpleasant shock of soul recognition for that person. To your dismay. To your embarrassment. This, you keep to yourself.
Why are old lovers able to become friends? Two reasons: They never truly loved each other or they love each other still.
Haul-a Loot!
So yeah I had all these stuff I wanted to buy with that little extra sumfin right?
Let's just say there was a sudden change of plans.
---
John Mayer's concert was supposed to happen earlier this year (I think May 15?), but then the date got moved to October 1. That was serendipitous already because I would've thought twice going to MOA, during May's humidity, with so many people pressed up against you (ugh), and I really had no one to go with at that time.
But then, a friend of mine (@sisagonuts) fell in love again with John Mayer (because of his Tumblr), and she insisted we get tickets already to avail of the early bird discount. I didn't want to commit yet, because at that time, something was being planned for October 1. I told myself if that something was finally NOT scheduled for October 1, I will buy tickets for the concert already.
A few days ago, I got the call confirming that the thing won't happen on October 1, so @sisagonuts and I went online and bought us some tickets for John Mayer's concert! :D

Books for the Long Weekend!
I was able to buy the two new PostSecret books at Fully Booked in Serendra (thanks Toni!). And finally saw a copy of Eat, Pray and Love, and I bought that too because I've wanted to have a copy ever since I read BuzzSugar's review.
But I still have these books to read:
Memories of Childhood
It was my neighbor's kid who had the piano lessons first. And then I was just being the saling-pusa that I am -- I distinctly remember the piano teacher giving me a few pointers already at my neighbor's house.I guess my neighbor complained to my parents because I was freeloading :P Hahah. Or maybe the teacher saw some "potential" and told my parents about it.
And so, one weekend in Cubao (I can hear/see Fiesta Carnival in my memory bank right now), we bought a decent piano, for me to develop my musical abilities. We officially hired the piano tutor, and when I got to pre-school, they enrolled me in the music center.
After four memorized piano pieces, two recitals, countless finger exercises (so that I'd hit the piano keys in just the right way -- not too soft, not too hard), and endless practices, I gave up piano lessons in my third grade. Maybe I got bored, or maybe my mom saw no more reason for me to continue, but I just dropped everything related to piano.
But, I can still play the first few bars of my first recital piece, I still have those long pianist's fingers, and I can still read musical notes. I'm so grateful my parents gave me this grand old thing years ago -- I wouldn't know music without it.

And I wouldn't know what cool music was without my dad's vinyls.
We had so many Beatles' albums, Kenny Rogers, a few Paul Anka ones, a Simon and Garfunkel album, John Lennon's Imagine, Michael Jackson's Bad, Cyndi Lauper's True Colors, U2's The Joshua Tree, a few compilation albums (love songs, disco hits, most requested songs) and of course, his jazz albums. I embraced the Beatles and U2, while I was already mildly interested in Michael Jackson and Cyndi Lauper (this was around the 1990's). Sayang, I wasn't able to appreciate his jazz albums. I guess I got too sleepy or bored when he played those hehehe.
A few years ago, I wanted to make bags with the album covers of dad's vinyls and record bowls with the plaka themselves. Good thing he put some sense into me, and made me realize that these albums are relics. And a reminder to both of us on how he passed on his love of music to me.

Click here, here and here for the bigger versions so you can see the book titles ;)
Love for music is not the only thing that my Dad passed on to me -- I got my love of reading from him, too. Who wouldn't love to read if you had these many books inside the house? [Those are just his old books, meron pa syang newer collection downstairs in his room, and randomly distributed in my sisters' bedrooms. And meron pang nasa kin din pala. Hehe.]
He had a wide variety of tastes in books -- he had the classics like The Brothers Karamzov, Crime and Punishment, Great Exptectations, Anna Karenina, and a really ancient copy of Homer's The Odyssey. He's got the science fiction books (mostly short story compilations), chick lit (Margaret Atwood's Dancing Girls and Edible Woman), scary stuff (Stephen King and Ann Rice), new age (The Handbook of Parapsychology, The Bible and Flying Saucers -- what the?) and a whole bunch of James Michener (Space, Alaska, Poland, The Source, Legacy, The Covenant, Texas, The Drifters, Journey, etc). I haven't even read half of those books on that shelf!
I am so going to inherit these books.

I've been staying in my family's house since Wednesday night, and I guess my "past" life haunted me. :)
All-Time 100 Novels
Here is TIME Magazine's All-Time 100 Novels (got this link from Loryces).
The books I've read from the list:
Animal Farm I read this in high school for a term paper. Learned the eternal truth: "All animals are equal but some animals are more equal than others."
Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret The best book to read during the awkward pre-teen years, when you're too old to be a child and to young to be a teenager. It touches on religion and sex in an honest, matter-of-fact way.
I love other Judy Blume books like Starring Sally J. Freedman as Herself, Blubber, Just as Long as We're Together, Then Again, Maybe I Won't and Tiger Eyes.
The Catcher in the Rye The ultimate angst novel. Enough said.
Gone with the Wind An epic love story between the bratty Scarlett and brash Rhett. The ultimate historical romantic novel.
The Lord of the Flies Again, for a term paper in high school. Forgot the gory details. This book preceded Survivor and Lost but has the same themes (almost) -- survival of the fittest in a strange island.
The Lord of the Rings Okay okay, I admit it -- haven't finished the first one, the The Fellowship of the Rings. But I have the books, and they're on my to-do list :)
The books I've been curious about ever since (again, from the list):
A Clockwork Orange This was made into a movie right?
The French Lieutenant's Woman Mala - choose-your-own adventure daw 'to?
The Grapes of Wrath If I really want to be depressed [The Pearl truly saddened me :( ]
The Great Gatsby Curious about the roaring 20's setting.
Invisible Man Had a high school classmate read this for a term paper -- curious about it ever since.
The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe Yes, kill me, haven't read any Narnia books yet.
Lolita I think I need to read this first before watching the movie versions [1997 by Adrian Lyne and 1962 by Stanley Kubrick].
Neuromancer One of the first books to mention the word cyberspace. Cool.
1984 Did you know this is the book with the original Big Brother?
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest One of those must-read classic novels that I haven't gotten around to reading.
To Kill a Mockingbird Again, another must-read classic.
The Sound and the Fury Ooooh... Faulkner. Haven't tried reading any of his books yet.
Slaughterhouse-Five Oooh, and Vonnegut's books too. Must have time to read up on those.
Mrs. Dalloway I think a good book to start with my exploration of Virginia Woolf.
---
I guess I have my reading list made for the rest of my life haha. Gawin na rin nating parang wish-list ito para sa Pasko hehehe.
---
I used to devour books when I was young. I would buy used books with my allowance, and when I finish those, I'd read my father's books. And pag nagsawa ako doon, I'd even read my little sisters' books!
Now, the only book I've read are those ebooks in the office during the rare moments that I don't have work. Sigh. I need to get back into my reading mode -- lalo na ngayon na there are countless coffeeshops to park my ass, order a scalding venti latte, and turn the pages ever so slowly as I enter the writer's imaginary world.
Read up peeps! TIME just gave us a great reading list for life! Enjoy :D
